Why Top Bar Hives?

Top Bar Hives (TBH) have many advantages over the regular framed Langstroth hive. Here are some examples:

1.- They are a more natural way to keep bees.

2.- Calmer bees.

3.- Less disturbance, which means less stress, and that means faster building bees and more honey!

4.-Less exposure for the beekeeper

5.- No constant heavy lifting

6.- Inexpensive- you will pay around $50 for the TBH, compared to $300 for the Langstroth hive

7.-No extractiong equipment is needed. Or any other stuff.

8.- You can produce the highest quality honey and wax.

9.- You don't need supers or any extra supplies, which takes up storage space.

10.- Good educational hive.

11.- Easy to build.

12.- Good hive for urban folks.

13.- If you happen to drop the hive, it won't break!!

14.- Weather-tight.

15.- Great for ANYONE! Even 9 year-olders can manage this hive easily!



Everything has disadvantages, unfourtanatly.

1.- Doesn't produce as much hive as the Langstroth (but who eats 150lbs. of honey in a year?)

2.- Comb is fragile and vurnable to comb collapes (there are ways to prevent this)

3.- The hive must be level. (no biggie for some folks)



Comparing the Pros and Cons...I think the TBHs are a better choice, seeing that there are WAY more pros than cons!
