Top Bar Hives are a unique way of keeping bees. It's a trough-shaped beehive, with bars on top of it. The bees build their comb off the top bars. Here are some pictures of my THB, I just built.
Entrence & Top Bars with a kerf in the Middle to fill in with wax
To examine a top bar hive, all you have to do is remove the cover, and pull out a top bar. But you must keep the bar straight. If you turn it, so the comb faces the ground, it can and will break. Keeping the beehive off the ground will help the bees survive in many ways. It discourages bee predators and many other things, that I cannot think off from the top of my head now. :-(
A cover is needed to keep water, sun, and winds out. More on this another time.
